BOOK PROJECT (ONGOING)
“DISPATCHES FROM A HEAD OF STATE” is an ongoing book project which began shortly after the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The short stories reflect the media's and public’s preoccupation with deciphering the thinking of one man in particular. Using the conceit of a first hand account, the stories purport to dispel the logic and machinations behind his obsessions, grievances, and infatuations.
They paint a portrait of a man, who, although very powerful, is bored by the minutiae of daily bureaucracy, or regularly disappointed by his subordinates. Sprinkled throughout the stories are references to real life events, and clues that everything is not well behind the strong man’s facade.

The show on Governors Island was conceived as a slowly developing content, with several events throughout its runtime. The exhibition opened with a public event, inviting the audience to fill in blanks within provided pages.

The Bucha massacre (Ukrainian: Бучанська різанина, romanized: Buchanska rizanyna) was the killing and abuse of Ukrainian civilians by Russian Armed Forces during the fight for and occupation of the Ukrainian city of Bucha amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On 6 March 2009 in Geneva, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov with a red button with the English word “reset” and the Roman alphabet transliteration of the Russian Cyrillic alphabet word перегрузка (“peregruzka”). It was intended that this would be the Russian word for “reset” but actually was the word for “overload”. (The correct translation would be перезагрузка [“perezagruzka”].) Additionally, the button switch was the type commonly used as an emergency stop on industrial equipment. Hillary Clinton was later praised by the Russian diplomats for resolving the issue politely, stating her team’s good intentions.
